ECO Tax Contribution Updates & Adjustments – Effective 1 July 2026
As part of the new Tourism Accommodation Regulations 2026, the Malta Tourism Authority (MTA) has introduced important changes to the Environmental Contribution (ECO Tax) applicable to all licensed tourist accommodation. These changes came into effect on 1 July 2026 and apply to all eligible stays from this date onwards.
What’s Changed?
From 1 July 2026, the Environmental Contribution has been updated as follows:
- €1.50 per adult (18+) per night
- Maximum contribution of €22.50 per person per visit
- The contribution must be charged separately from the accommodation rate.
- The Environmental Contribution is not subject to VAT and should not be included when calculating OTA commissions.
New Submission & Payment Process
The Malta Tourism Authority has also introduced a new process for accommodation providers to declare and pay the Environmental Contribution.
Property owners and accommodation operators are required to:
- Log in to the official Environmental Contribution portal.
- Complete the required declaration for the relevant reporting period.
- Submit the return online.
- Settle the amount due using the available online payment methods.
